About the Driver Recruitment Tool Kit
The PSBA Membership Committee continues to focus on the statewide driver shortage and developing tools and resources PSBA members can use to help with recruitment and retention. In response to the driver shortage, PSBA created a Recruitment Event Toolkit. PSBA members are encouraged to host hiring events for interested applicants and can access the toolkit to find information on hosting your own event. Hiring events that are submitted to the PSBA will be organized on PSBA's Hiring Events tab on SchoolBusHero.com. Found in the toolkit below, are resources you can use to start planning your hiring event. PSBA will be advertising the hiring events happening across the state to drive up participation.

Hiring Events
Open Application Day Planning and event doesn't need to be complicated or pricey. Simply hosting an application day can draw prospective drivers and aides to your location. Advertise on-the-spot interviews, easy application process and facility tours to let them see where they might be working. You may also be able to list the event on local job boards and community websites. |
What You Might Need:
|
Pop-Up Event Bring your hiring event to the community where THEY are! Set up a table at your local grocery store, YMCA, retirement home, VA, shopping center, park or other community hot spots. Everyone is busy these days - this technique brings the information and application to the community while they are already running errands or are out and about. |
What You Might Need:
|
Family Fun Day Family Fun Days are another way to draw your community to your location and to advertise open positions. Rent a moon bounce, have fair games like ring toss, or invite a local musician to play at your event. Ask your school district, local grocery store or community facebook groups to help advertise your FREE event to draw a crowd. |

Test Drive Event Test drive events are a great way to get prospective drivers behind the wheel to see if driving bus is their next career path. This type of event may take more planning time as you need to secure a space for the test drive, a trainer to be on board and just a little more logistic planning. However, a test drive event can be great for publicity/advertising (think - local mayor test driving a bus on the news!) and more invested applicants who truly want to see what it would be like to drive a bus. |

Driver Testimonial
"My name is Shelley Roush, and I had been retired for 6 years when I drove past the big yellow school bus advertising “test drive a school bus.” My supervisor, Doug Stamm, also services my lawn mower. He encouraged me to come out to the test drive event. I drove the bus and remembered thinking it wasn’t as hard as I imagined. I decided I would like to get back into a work routine, and still have time for myself and family.
The whole process was very straightforward. In class training and passing the written tests for my permit was a breeze. The pre trip knowledge, mostly under the hood, was a bit overwhelming at first. The trainer was very patient and encouraging, and with determination I was able to identify everything required with ease. I was able to pass my driving test with confidence and ease.
Becoming a school bus driver was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made! I have an awesome supervisor and supportive fellow drivers. I’m part of an amazing team!" - Shelley Roush, School Bus Driver at Rohrer Bus
